Two-Eccentrics Steam Engine

Two-Eccentrics Steam Engine

This model steam engine uses two "eccentrics" stacked on top of each other to create the out-of-phase movement of the piston and valve (for an explanation of what that means, see my page on the Right-Angle Steam Engine).

My other steam engine models use a single offset crank arm with the motion taken off in two different directions. But real engines are always made with two separate take-offs (usually one eccentric like these for the valve and a longer crank arm for the piston). So this model is closer to how real engines work.

However, it is much more difficult in this model to intuitively see how the timing is created. After studying one of the other models, this one will start to make sense too.
